Constraining top quark flavor violation and dipole moments through three and four top quark productions at the LHC

2018 •

Hamzeh Khanpour, Malihe Malekhosseini

In this paper, we examine the sensitivity of the three-top quark production at the LHC to the top quark flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC) as well as the sensitivity of the four-top production to the strong and weak dipole moments of the top quark. Upper limits at 95% CL on the branching fractions of B(t → qX), where X = g, Z, γ, H and q = u, c, are set by performing an analysis on three-top events in the same-sign dilepton channel. We consider the main sources of the background processes and a realistic detector simulation is performed at the center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV. In the second part of this work, based on the recent upper limits which have been set on the four-top quark cross section by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations from 13 TeV data, we constrain the top quark strong and weak dipole moments. The bounds on the top quark dipole moments are presented using the future LHC prospects for four-top quark cross section measurement.

Search for the flavor-changing neutral current interactions of the top quark and the Higgs boson which decays into a pair of b quarks at s = 13 $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ TeV

A search for flavor-changing neutral currents (FCNC) in events with the top quark and the Higgs boson is presented. The Higgs boson decay to a pair of b quarks is considered. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1 recorded by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s}=13 $$ s = 13 TeV. Two channels are considered: single top quark FCNC production in association with the Higgs boson (pp → tH), and top quark pair production with FCNC decay of the top quark (t → qH). Final states with one isolated lepton and at least three reconstructed jets, among which at least two are associated with b quarks, are studied. No significant deviation is observed from the predicted background. Observed (expected) upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the branching fractions of top quark decays, ℬ(t → uH)

Resurrecting $$ b\overline{b}h $$ with kinematic shapes

2021 •

Ayan Paul

The associated production of a $$ b\overline{b} $$ b b ¯ pair with a Higgs boson could provide an important probe to both the size and the phase of the bottom-quark Yukawa coupling, yb. However, the signal is shrouded by several background processes including the irreducible Zh, Z →$$ b\overline{b} $$ b b ¯ background. We show that the analysis of kinematic shapes provides us with a concrete prescription for separating the yb-sensitive production modes from both the irreducible and the QCD-QED backgrounds using the $$ b\overline{b}\gamma \gamma $$ b b ¯ γγ final state. We draw a page from game theory and use Shapley values to make Boosted Decision Trees interpretable in terms of kinematic measurables and provide physics insights into the variances in the kinematic shapes of the different channels that help us complete this feat. Adding interpretability to the machine learning algorithm opens up the black-box and allows us to cherry-pick only those kinematic variables that matter mos...

Probing top quark FCNC couplings in the triple-top signal at the high energy LHC and future circular collider

2019 •

Hamzeh Khanpour

Our main aim in this paper is to present detailed studies to probe the top quark flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) interactions at tqg, tqγ, tqH and tqZ(σ µν , γµ) vertices in the triple-top signal pp → tt ¯ t (¯ tt ¯ t) at the high energy proposal of Large Hadron Collider (HE-LHC) and future circular hadron-hadron collider (FCC-hh). To this end, we investigate the production of three top quarks which arises from the FCNC couplings taken into account the fast simulation at √ s = 27 TeV of HE-LHC and 100 TeV of FCC-hh considering the integrated luminosities of 10, 15 and 20 ab −1. All the relevant backgrounds are considered in a cut based analysis to obtain the limits on the anomalous couplings and the corresponding branching ratios. The obtained exclusion limits on the coupling strengths and the branching ratios are summarized and compared in details with the results in the literature, namely the most recent direct LHC experimental limits and HL-LHC projections as well. We show that, for higher energy phase of LHC, a dedicated search for the top quark FCNC couplings can achieve much better sensitivities to the triple-top signal than other top quark production scenarios. We found that the limits for the branching ratios of tqg and tqH transitions could reach an impressive sensitivity and the obtained 95% CL limits are at least three orders of magnitude better than the current LHC experimental results as well as the existing projections of HL-LHC. Search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the b b ¯ b b ¯ $$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}}\mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ final state at s $$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV

Julia Velkovska

Results of a search for nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs, with each Higgs boson decaying to a $$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ b b ¯ pair, are presented. This search uses data from proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb−1, collected by the CMS detector at the LHC. No signal is observed, and a 95% confidence level upper limit of 847 fb is set on the cross section for standard model nonresonant Higgs boson pair production times the squared branching fraction of the Higgs boson decay to a $$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $$ b b ¯ pair. The same signature is studied, and upper limits are set, in the context of models of physics beyond the standard model that predict modified couplings of the Higgs boson.

Top-quark physics at the CLIC electron-positron linear collider

2019 •

Mila Pandurovic

The Compact Linear Collider (CLIC) is a proposed future high-luminosity linear electron-positron collider operating at three energy stages, with nominal centre-of-mass energies $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 380 GeV, 1.5 TeV, and 3 TeV. Its aim is to explore the energy frontier, providing sensitivity to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) and precision measurements of Standard Model processes with an emphasis on Higgs boson and top-quark physics. The opportunities for top-quark physics at CLIC are discussed in this paper. The initial stage of operation focuses on top-quark pair production measurements, as well as the search for rare flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) top-quark decays. It also includes a top-quark pair production threshold scan around 350 GeV which provides a precise measurement of the top-quark mass in a well-defined theoretical framework. At the higher-energy stages, studies are made of top-quark pairs produced in association with other particles. A study of t̄tH prod...

Search for new phenomena in events with two opposite-charge leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at $$ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

2021 •

Baida Achkar

The results of a search for direct pair production of top squarks and for dark matter in events with two opposite-charge leptons (electrons or muons), jets and missing transverse momentum are reported, using 139 fb−1 of integrated luminosity from proton-proton collisions at $$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 13 TeV, collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2 (2015–2018). This search considers the pair production of top squarks and is sensitive across a wide range of mass differences between the top squark and the lightest neutralino. Additionally, spin-0 mediator dark-matter models are considered, in which the mediator is produced in association with a pair of top quarks. The mediator subsequently decays to a pair of dark-matter particles. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model background, and limits are set at 95% confidence level. The results exclude top squark masses up to about 1 TeV, and masses of the lightest neutralino up to about ...

Search for heavy Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 13 TeV The CMS collaboration

Kyung Hee University

A search is presented for additional scalar (H) or pseudoscalar (A) Higgs bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data set analyzed corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Final states with one or two charged leptons are considered. The invariant mass of the reconstructed top quark pair system and variables that are sensitive to the spin of the particles decaying into the top quark pair are used to search for signatures of the H or A bosons. The interference with the standard model top quark pair background is taken into account. A moderate signal-like deviation compatible with an A boson with a mass of 400 GeV is observed with a global significance of 1.9 standard deviations. New stringent constraints are reported on the strength of the coupling of the hypothetical bosons to the top quark, with the mass of the bosons ranging from 400 to 750 GeV and their total relative width from 0.5 to 25%. The results of the search are also interpreted in a minimal supersymmetric standard model scenario. Values of m A from 400 to 700 GeV are probed, and a region with values of tan β below 1.0 to 1.5, depending on m A , is excluded at 95% confidence level.
